Many students find that they enjoy taking philosophy classes, regardless of their major, because they allow students to learn a different way of looking at the world and thinking about things. While this new way of approaching ideas can be very exciting, it can also making writing philosophy papers difficult for students, because it is new and different. Coming up with a good paper topic can make the whole process much easier and set you up for success with the paper.
Follow these easy steps to come up with an excellent philosophy term paper topic:
Different philosophy courses are structured differently: some focus on philosophers from a particular time period or country, some focus around a concept like free will, and some seek to answer a particular problem in philosophy. Similarly, a term paper can take on any of these approaches. Decide whether there is a concept that you’ve covered in your class that you’d like to delve more deeply into, or whether you’d like to explore in more depth the work of one philosopher in particular.
Regardless of which path you choose, make sure that you can reference well known philosophers, especially the ones you’ve studied in your class, with relation to your topic. Even if they didn’t write specifically on the topic that you’ve chosen, you can compare how their work would have fit into the topic that you are writing about. Philosophy as a field is highly referential, which means that the ideas of one person are inevitably held up against the ideas others, so you’ll want to make sure to include this in your paper.
Depending on the length of your term paper, you’ll need to make your subject narrow or broad enough to be able to fill the number of pages that you need to.
Philosophy also relies heavily on examples to demonstrate a point or to disprove a point. So if your thesis—the main subject or point of your paper—has to do with an idea or concept, make sure that you can back it up with relevant examples.
